A reflective essay

Reflecting on my growth and experiences in English 102 this semester at Howard University in Washington D.C

Insights and lessons gained

This semester in English 102, I’ve become a more confident and focused writer. At first, I mostly just tried to finish my work. I didn’t always think about what my writing meant or how it could connect with others. Now, I see writing as something more. It helps me speak up, tell my story, and share who I am as a student and someone going into healthcare.

Strengths and areas for improvement

Some things I do well as a writer are using strong vocabulary, organizing my ideas clearly, and formatting my work neatly. These skills help my writing make sense and look clean. I still need to get better at using quotes in a meaningful way, writing better conclusions, and coming up with titles that grab attention. Knowing what I need to work on helps me do better each time I revise.

Dream jar goal

My Dream Jar goal was to improve the flow of my writing and use more imagery, symbolism, and facts like statistics. I think I met that goal. I learned how to use smoother transitions and add more detail and evidence to support my ideas. I also got better at using quotes in different ways, like paraphrasing or using just part of a quote when it fits better.

Favorite and least favorite assignments

My favorite assignment was the Visions of Freedom interview. I liked working with classmates, going to the film festival, and talking about the movies we watched. Writing about those conversations made the assignment feel real and interesting. My least favorite assignment was the Visualizing a Rhetorical Situation project. I don’t really like group work because it’s hard when everyone isn’t on the same page.

The power of writing

In the end, I’ve learned that writing isn’t just something we do for school. It helps me think better, explain what I believe, and get ready for my future. I know now that writing can be powerful, and I’ll carry that with me going forward.
