Artifacts #1 and #2 Synopsis - The essay, Writing Against Silence, was written to compare how Audre Lorde and Mia McKenzie discuss the theme of silence in their respective works. The goal was to analyze how each author addresses the causes and consequences of silence, especially in social and racial contexts. I explored how both writers connect silence to fear and call for action in different ways. I chose to include this essay in my portfolio because it shows my ability to analyze complex texts and engage with important social issues.
Artifacts #3 and #4 Synopsis - This essay, Comparing the Economic Visions of Coates and Rustin, was written to analyze how Ta-Nehisi Coates and Bayard Rustin propose different solutions for racial and economic inequality. I examined Coates’s argument for reparations and Rustin’s push for coalition politics, highlighting their distinct political goals. I chose to include this essay in my portfolio because it shows my ability to compare complex political ideas and consider how combining them could lead to real change.
Artifact #5 Synopsis - This reverse outline exercise was meant to help me analyze the structure and clarity of my essay Comparing the Economic Visions of Coates and Rustin. I identified the thesis, topic sentences, and examined whether each paragraph supported my overall argument. I also reflected on how my thesis evolved and how well my evidence supported my claims. I included this piece in my portfolio to show my ability to revise critically and strengthen my analytical writing.
Artifact #6 Synopsis - This essay compares the economic and political arguments made by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Bayard Rustin regarding racial injustice. I examined Coates’s call for reparations and Rustin’s emphasis on coalition politics as responses to systemic racism. The essay explores the strengths of each argument and ultimately suggests that combining both perspectives may be the most effective approach to achieving justice. I included this piece in my portfolio to highlight my ability to analyze contrasting viewpoints and build a balanced argument.
Artifact #7 Synopsis - For this assignment, my partner and I watched Shutdown, a documentary produced by The Ohio State University that explores racial inequities at McKinley High School. We analyzed how the film reveals the impact of systemic racism on students, staff, and the school’s culture. Our discussion focused on how institutional policies and social dynamics limit freedom and opportunity for Black students. I chose to include this piece in my portfolio because it deepened my understanding of how racial injustice operates in real-world educational settings.
